Cathy McKinney is an acclaimed professor and director of music therapy, renowned for her expertise in the areas of music therapy in mental health, clinical improvisation, supervision, advanced topics, and the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). A Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery (AMI) and trainer endorsed by AMI, she is also the editor of the Journal of the AMI. Dr. McKinney has published in music therapy, psychology, and behavioral medicine journals and is renowned for her research on the psychological and physiological effects of GIM. In 2009, she was awarded the Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina.
