Sentinel Peak Park, known as “A” Mountain, is the iconic symbol of Tucson and a testament to the city’s rich history. Located beneath the 2,900-foot peak, it was once home to the Hohokam Indians as early as 800 AD, as well as Piman people settlements in the 17th century. The name “Tucson” originates from the Piman phrase ‘Schuk-Shon’, meaning “at the foot of the black mountain”. Sentinel Peak Park was used as a lookout for the early settlers, who lived in fear of hostile raiders. In 1915, University of Arizona students constructed the white washed stone “A” that still stands today. City of Tucson Parks and Recreation is proud to maintain Sentinel Peak Park as a treasured landmark and reminder of the city’s past.
