Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center (CHSC) has been helping individuals with communication challenges for nearly a century. Founded in 1921 by Helen Newell Garfield, daughter-in-law of President James Garfield, CHSC’s mission is to provide lip-reading classes and other services for adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. As the oldest hearing and speech center in the nation and Northeast Ohio’s only nonprofit dedicated solely to serving those with special communication needs, CHSC is committed to helping individuals become independent members of the Greater Cleveland Community.
