Disability Network Capital Area (formerly known as Capital Area Center for Independent Living) is a nonprofit organization with a rich and long history in the Greater Lansing Area. Established in 1976, it was founded by Michigan State University students Jeff Peters, Len Sawich, and Duncan Wyeth, and was based on the work of Ed Roberts and the Independent Living Movement. The staff includes Rehabilitation Counselors, Social Workers, and Independent Living Specialists–all of whom are 51% individuals with disabilities, as mandated by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The service area includes the counties of Clinton, Eaton, Ingham and Shiawassee, and Disability Network Capital Area works to benefit not just those with disabilities but everyone in the community.
