Special Olympics Illinois (SOILL) is a nonprofit organization providing programming for people in 102 counties across the state. It is organized into 11 geographic Regions, each with a team to ensure SOILL programming is implemented successfully at the local level. Athletes compete at their Region Qualifier and those who earn a gold medal may advance to the State Championships. Region I, which provides programming for people in Champaign, Christian, Clark, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Effingham, Jasper, Logan, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Vermilion counties, is overseen by a Region Director, with additional team members responsible for sports programming, fundraising campaigns, outreach, communication and education initiatives.
