Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) is a locally founded organization dedicated to providing athletic opportunities to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968 and established in North Carolina in 1970, SONC has grown to be a globally recognized program, with nearly 40,000 children and adults participating every year. From its humble beginnings with 400 athletes at the first Special Olympics International Games in Chicago, SONC has developed into a premier organization that helps participants realize their athletic potential.
