The Arc Community Advocates was founded in 1952, formerly known as the Kalamazoo Association for Retarded Children, by parents of developmentally disabled children. Their mission is to provide special programming and education to the community on the needs of agencies, advocate for those with a developmental disability, so they can participate fully in all aspects of their community, and refer people directly to agencies that can help them with their specific needs. Community Advocates staff and volunteers focus on advocating for and educating the community on the needs of the developmentally disabled population, and seek to impact the mental health and educational systems for the benefit of this population.
