UCP of Greater Cleveland was founded in 1950 by a group of determined parents who wanted to create better opportunities for their children with cerebral palsy. At the time, institutionalization was the recommended option for people with disabilities, but these parents knew that their children and all individuals with disabilities had a right to a productive, inclusive life. In response, they created a loosely-knit group of programs, including a nursery school, a summer camp, a social-recreational program, and a mother’s club. Over the years, these programs have evolved into an accredited, high impact, thriving organization that provides a continuum of services throughout Greater Cleveland. These services include pediatric therapy, family-focused case management and education, employment opportunities, and community integration services for adults.
